Referring a Patient to Inpatient Rehabilitation

Admission to the Inpatient Rehabilitation Units at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital requires a rehabilitation medicine consult. Referring physicians can request a consult by completing a computerized physician order (if available) for an "MD Rehab Consult," or by calling one of the pager numbers found on the Infonet On Call Consult Schedule or listed below.
A physiatrist will complete an evaluation in 24 hours to determine the recommended level of care. At minimum, patients must:
  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Require physical therapy and occupational therapy (or speech therapy)
  • Be able to participate in three hours per day of therapy
  • Have reasonable chance for functional gains
  • Have medical issues that require daily physician and/or nursing attention
  • Be medically stable
Patients that are deemed appropriate candidates for rehabilitation will be admitted to the unit upon financial clearance, medical readiness and bed availability. Further questions about the admission process can be addressed by calling one of our admissions coordinators at (212) 305-3964 for NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia or (212) 746-0548 for NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell.
